Talk Therapy
What it is. How it works. What to Expect.
What is Talk Therapy?
It is a healing and professional relationship between a therapist and a client. Where clients get the opportunity and support to explore themselves and learn how to address life’s challenges in a healthy way. This journey of self exploration my increase a client’s self awareness which may result in significant changes in the client’s life.
How does it work?
Talk Therapy is a specific approach to therapy. However, there are many different therapy models or interventions that can be utilized within Talk Therapy depending on individual client goals, as well as any mental health concerns they may be experiencing. It can help clients identify conflicting values or beliefs that are impacting them without the judgement of peers. The act of developing a therapeutic relationship with a counselor can provide a level of comfort and trust that a client may not have in their everyday life. It allows for emotional vulnerability without the fear of being judged. Talk therapy also works with each client in developing skills that the client can implement in their life outside of session to help cope with any stressors or triggers that impact their day to day life. However, in order for Talk Therapy to work, the client must be willing to be open and honest throughout the process.
What to expect
Most Talk Therapy sessions are about 45 minutes to an hour. Depending on what the client needs, it usually occurs once a week. Some clients may need more occurrences while others may need less. Each client and their experience is unique to them. It can be expected that the client and the therapist will work together in identifying areas in a client’s life that are causing distress, maybe even identifying and working through behaviors that are negatively impacting a client’s life. It can also be expected that the counselor and the client will discuss emotions and feelings that are caused by stress, relationships, trauma, and/or major life changes. It is expected for the client and the therapist to work together in identifying and implementing skills that will benefit the client’s quality of life.
