Frequently Asked Questions
-
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a therapy modality that uses bilateral stimulation (use of stimulus that is presented to both sides of the body) designed to alleviate distress associated with trauma, particularly with PTSD and the memories associated with it. It focuses on past disturbances or emotional experiences that affect your daily life. The goal is to work through these obstacles so that your daily life is not effected by past experiences.
-
No, In EMDR you are completely aware the entire time. You are awake and have the power to stop at any time.
-
Talk Therapy is a more traditional form of therapy that focuses on identifying any negative beliefs that you may have developed because of past experiences. You and I would be participating in one-on-one conversation where I ask questions to assist you in self reflection. The goal is to improve self awareness, assist you in making sense of any negative experiences, and how you respond or react to them. With this new insight, I then support you in identifying and implementing strategies for managing any stressors that affect your day-to-day life.

While both forms of therapy help to overcome trauma, EMDR is much more concise in its process. It can minimize the extent in which clients relive their trauma unlike talking through it in talk therapy. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help process traumatic memories on a physical and physiological level, helping process the trauma without necessarily trying to make sense of it. While talk therapy involves more communication and open dialogue, it can allow the client to explore their trauma in depth and work to make sense of it. Both are very beneficial, each client is unique and this is where we can work together to find which therapeutic approach works for you.
